Tom Smart
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Smart was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AnaptysBio in 2007. Prior to AnaptysBio, Mr. Smart served as Chief Business Officer at therapeutic antibody pioneer, XOMA Ltd. Before XOMA, Mr. Smart was Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at GenVec, Inc., and held various positions at Genetics Institute, Inc. (now Wyeth), G.D. Searle (now Pfizer), and Cell Genesys, Inc.
Mr. Smart holds a BS in biological sciences from Cornell University and an MBA in finance and marketing from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He has completed an ISS-accredited director education program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, and serves on the board of directors of AnaptysBio, Inc., Acologix, Inc. and on the Amgen Bioprocessing Center Advisory Board of the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.
David J. King, Ph.D.
Vice President, Research
Dr. King was appointed Vice President, Research in November 2008. Prior to AnaptysBio, Dr. King was Senior Director, Molecular Biology & Biochemistry for Medarex where he was involved in the design and selection of therapeutic antibodies, and led the development of a new class of antibody-drug conjugates. Dr. King is an established expert in antibody engineering and antibody therapeutics and has been involved in the design and development of three FDA-approved antibody products and several other clinical stage antibodies. At Celltech in the UK, where Dr. King worked for 14 years, he was involved in the design and development of Mylotarg®, an antibody-drug conjugate for therapy of acute myeloid leukemia, and was the lead inventor of Cimzia®, a PEGylated antibody fragment for therapy of autoimmune diseases. Prior to joining Medarex, Dr. King was at Coulter Pharmaceuticals, later acquired by Corixa, where he was part of the team which successfully refiled the BLA for Bexxar®, a radiolabelled antibody for therapy of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Dr. King received his B.Sc. from the University of Warwick and his Ph.D. from the University of Surrey in the U.K., and was a Glaxo Group Research postdoctoral fellow.
Hamza Suria, M.Sc., MBA
Vice President, Corporate Development
Mr. Suria was appointed Vice President, Corporate Development in December 2008. Prior to AnaptysBio, Mr. Suria was Senior Director, Business Development at Maxygen where he was responsible for partnering and alliance management of next-generation protein therapeutics with Roche, Sanofi-Aventis, Bayer, Astellas and others. Before Maxygen, Mr. Suria was Director, Business Development at Diabetogen Biosciences with responsibility for corporate partnerships with Abgenix and the development of otelixizumab. He also held various business development positions at Viron Therapeutics and the Robarts Research Institute.
Mr. Suria holds a BSc in Biochemistry from Kalamazoo College, an MSc in Immunology from the University of Western Ontario and an Executive MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. Mr. Suria is an ASAP-certified Alliance Management Professional.
Mohammad Tabrizi, Ph.D.
Vice President, Preclinical Development
Dr. Tabrizi was named Vice President of Preclinical Development in February of 2009. He has extensive experience in the research and development of biologics and monoclonal antibodies. Prior to AnaptysBio, Dr. Tabrizi was Director of Translational Sciences at MedImmune, a wholly owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca, where he was involved in the design and implementation of translational strategies for development of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies from discovery to the clinic. His product development experience spans many therapeutic areas including oncology and inflammatory disease, and his technical expertise includes preclinical pharmacology and safety, preclinical and clinical pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, GLP-compliant bioanalytics, and clinical pharmacology of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. In addition, Dr. Tabrizi was one of the key contributors to the successful establishment of the AstraZeneca R&D facilities in Hayward, California, and played a vital role in the integration of the Hayward team into the global company. He has served in numerous managerial and scientific positions at AstraZeneca, Abgenix, Inc. (now Amgen, Inc.), Coulter Pharmaceutical, Inc. (now Corixa), and TAP holdings, Inc.
Dr. Tabrizi received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from University of Houston and his Ph.D. from University at Buffalo, State University of New York (SUNY) in the area of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He completed his postdoctoral training in pharmacology at SUNY with a focus on therapeutics.
Steven S. Neben, Ph.D., PMP
Senior Director, Project & Alliance Management
Dr. Neben joined AnaptysBio as head of Project and Alliance Management in June 0f 2008. Prior to AnaptysBio, Dr. Neben held the position of Director of Project and Alliance Management at XOMA Ltd where he managed internal pipeline projects and multi-target therapeutic antibody discovery and development collaborations with Schering-Plough, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, and Lexicon Pharmaceuticals. Before XOMA, Dr. Neben was a Senior Scientist and responsible for respiratory diseases drug discovery at Bayer Biotechnology and Staff Scientist at Wyeth/Genetics Institute.
Dr. Neben received both a BA and Ph.D. in Biophysics and Medical Physics from University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Neben is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional.
