John G. Monroe, Ph.D.

John G. Monroe, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a former Senior Director at Genentech where he led the Immunology Discovery Department that is responsible for new target discovery and pre-clinical validation. He also led the Research and Early Clinical Development Department that is responsible for precision medicine strategies for Genentech’s Immunology, Infectious Disease, Metabolism and Neuroscience programs. Before joining biotech, he was a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. For over 20 years Dr. Monroe oversaw a research lab at the university and published seminal papers in the field of B lymphocyte biology and immune cell tolerance. He was also the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pathology and directed the Cancer Immunology Program. Dr. Monroe currently consults for several early stage biotech companies to advise on target prioritization and pre- and early stage clinical programs in autoimmunity and immuno-oncology. Dr. Monroe received his Ph.D. in Immunology from Duke University and did a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
